  2.   This is the announce of the teTeX-0.3.4, a TeX distribution for UNIX
  3.   compatible systems.

  6. The distribution is available from

  15. All these sites are mirrored by many other sites in the world. The first

  20. The third site is a well known Linux site which is regularly dumped
  21. onto CD-ROMs. So, you might get teTeX on a Linux CD that way (although
  22. teTeX origins from Linux, it can be used on other UNIX systems as well).

  25.   The most important changes with respect to the 0.3.3 version:

  48. For those who do not know what teTeX is: teTeX is a complete TeX
  49. distribution for UNIX compatible systems. My main aims when putting
  50. things together have been:

  52.     - create something simple to install, use and maintain
  53.     - include as much useful documentation as possible
  54.     - test as much as possible and try to avoid bugs
  55.

  61. Main features of the teTeX distribution:

  63. - file organisation TDS (TeX Directory Structure) Standard compliant
  64. - very easy to install and customize (install.sh and texconfig utility)
  65. - LaTeX2e (June 1996) together with lots of
  66.   extra LaTeX packages (most packages mentioned in the LaTeX Companion)
  67. - a lot of documentation: more than 130 dvi/ps-files, teTeX manual, FAQs
  68. - support for read-only inputs tree (i.e. possibility to use alternate
  69.   destination for newly created fonts)
  70. - ready for a multi platform setup
  71. - fast file searching. web2c patched to work with kpathsea-2.6. The
  72.   search paths are chosen to give high performance.
  73. - run-time configuration files for dvi-drivers and tex+friends.
  74. - a nice set of fonts to play with: PostScript fonts, ams, pandora, cm,
  75.   dc, oldgerman. All easily accessible by LaTeX.
  76. - the whole distribution can be installed anywhere in the
  77.   filesystem (e.g. /usr/TeX or /usr/local/tex). You do not
  78.   need to set any environment variable as long as you keep
  79.   the original structure of the package.

  145. The sources may compile on other UNIX compatible platforms, too. You
  146. need GNU make and gcc. I am not sure if lex does work on all systems, but
  147. at least flex did alway work.
